__

Well, we finally got the much needed and greatly appreciated rain we had been hoping for. Thankfully the storm didn’t cause as much damage to southern Texas as feared. We will be back at the market on Saturday with the regular assortment of produce. We have been selling out of the majority of fresh vegetables early so we recommend most people to get there at 9:00 to get the best variety and freshest produce.

This week we will have our farm fresh eggs, okra, some sweet peppers, hot peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, patty squash, zucchini squash, basil, cantaloupe, onions, pecan tarts, fresh baked breads, canned goods, pesto, dried fruit, dried tomatoes, herb plants, basil plants, and fertilizer.

One quick reminder, avoiding the recent scare with salmonella on tomatoes and now on jalapenos is one of the many benefits of buying produce from a local farmers market rather than from a large chain. All our growers only sell produce grown on our own farms by our own hands.

See you at the market!
Howdy,

After 30 days of 100 degree weather this year, this week didn't feel so bad. All the hot weather crops are loving the ample sun and high temperatures. Unfortunately, our tomatoes are unable to set fruit at temperatures over 92 degrees. The plants are 5'-6' tall but don't have any fruit. As soon as it cools off we hope they will start producing again. The chickens have slowed down their egg-laying also due to the heat.

This week at the market we will have the following: zucchini squash, basil, pecan tarts, fresh baked breads, canned goods, pestos, dried fruit, dried tomatoes and herb plants. Also at the market this week you’ll find okra, a few tomatoes, patty squash, hot and sweet peppers, herbs, eggplants, new potatoes, carrots, onions, slicing cucumbers, pickling cucumbers, cantaloupes and farm fresh, free-range eggs.

Hello

The little bit of rain we received this week was more than welcome. We saw a lot of our plants which were struggling in the intense heat really perk-up when the rains came. Okra, squash, peppers, tomatoes and eggplant are really starting to thrive. We also moved our portable chicken coop to "greener pastures" this week. The chickens seemvery happy and even ignore the heat while scratching around for seeds and treats. We even saw some wild quail out with the chickens this week.

At the market this week you’ll find eggs, baked breads, canned goods, dried tomatoes and fruits, potatoes, onions, bell peppers, hot peppers, tomatoes, pickling and slicing cucumbers, okra, squash, zucchini, eggplant, basil, herb plants, aloe plants, fig plants and more.

Happy 4th of July!

We are excited about this coming weekend. Several people have asked if we will be open this weekend. The answer is, of copurse, YES! Many of you will also be happy to hear that Tony anmd Suzanne from P/2 Organic will be back this week. Add the rain which has cooled things off nicely and we should have a grerat market day.

We just planted more pepper, tomato and squash seeds so this fall we should have a good, second crop. The okra is doing well and peppers are still producing. The squash vine borers are starting to take their toll on the squash vines but we are mulching with old onion tops which (we have been told) will keep them away. Only time will tell.

At the market this week you’ll find eggs, baked breads, canned goods, dried tomatoes and fruits, potatoes, onions, bell peppers, hot peppers, tomatoes, pickling and slicing cucumbers, okra, squash, eggplant, basil, herb plants, aloe plants and more.

__

Hello,

We hope everyone is enjoying the summer sun and not getting too hot. We will have plenty of fresh, free-range farm eggs for sale, even though the hens are starting to feel the heat. They stay in the shade when they can but still manage to eat alot of pasture each week. Most of our vegetables are enjoying the sun but it continues to be difficult providing enough water for them to be truely happy. We've started cutting okra everyday as a few of you mentioned that some had started to get a little tough last week. The peppers are giving all they can and we should have a lot of colorful bell peppers this week as well as the hot and spicy peppers that seem to be many peoples favorites. The cherry tomatoes are slowing down while some of the heirloom tomatoes that we started are just about to produce. Blackberries just couldn't handle the heat and have now stopped producing. Franklin will have onions and potatoes that grew well this winter and are now ready to eat. Cucumbers
, eggplant (possibly), roma tomatoes, serrano peppers and cantaloupe (as of last week) will also be available. Tony will be back next week with all the goodies that he has (a van full). After speaking with many of you, it is very apparent that he was missed and will be busy explaining his adventures when he returns.

__

Hello,

This week we spent most of our time weeding and watering. The heat is really hitting our crops hard. They are still producing but they need some extra care to keep them going. Unfortunately the heat and lack of rain have almost put an end to the blackberries and our sweet corn. There are some plants that are loving this weather and our okra and squash will prove it. The peppers, especially the hot peppers, are hitting peak production and are at their finest flavor. Eggplant will be producing all summer long and we'll have some recipes for those who are interested.

This week at the market we will have eggs, tomatoes, potatoes, slicing cucumbers, eggplant, okra, squash, hot peppers, red onions, white onions, mint, basil and sweet bell peppers. We've had several inquiries lately from farmers wanting to sell produce at our market. We will keep you posted.

Hope to see you there!

Hello all,

It has been extremely windy out here on the farm this week with record breaking heat. It doesn’t look like that will change anytime in the foreseeable future. For us that means putting up shade cloth for the more delicate crops and watering a little more often for the rest. Mornings and evenings continue to be very pleasant and a great time to work outside. Of course all the hot crops love the weather we’ve been having and are really taking off. Those crops include okra, peppers, tomatoes and squash all of which will be at the market this week.

We want to reassure everyone that our tomatoes are not the ones that caused the scare this last week. Our tomatoes are grown locally using organic growing principles and, of course, salmonella free which is one of the many benefits of buying from SAFM. Blackberries are looking good and we should have several pints at market. The chickens are proving to be the smartest animals out here by staying in the shade during the heat of the day and going out scratching most of the rest of time. The cows seem to mind the heat less than the chickens and are still able to find plenty of good grass to eat.

Tony from P/2 Organic will be taking a few weeks off this summer but will be at the market the next 2 weeks. This week at the market we will have will have blackberries, okra, squash, potatoes, carrots, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, basil, pecan tarts, fresh baked breads, canned goods, pestos, dried fruit, dried tomatoes, herb plants, eggplant, tomato and pepper plants, basil plants, and fertilizer.

Suzanne and I have begun cleaning out the greenhouses this week. There's nothing like carrying 25# in each hand for 100 - 200 feet each trip for hours a day. Pumping Iron has nothing on us! We hope to be completely done in 2 1/2 weeks so we can take off to Port Aransas for a while.

We still have tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers tho' - we've been leaving the plants that are still producing.

For the market this week:eggs, tomatoes, green tomatoes, peppers, burpless cucumbers, slicer cucumbers, carrots, beets, new potatoes, zucchini, onions, basil, roux, coriander, fresh baked breads, canned goods, pestos, dried fruit, dried tomatoes, herb plants, pepper plants, basil plants, and fertilizer.

Greetings from SAFM,

My name is Harry Simmons with Simmons Family Farms and I was asked by Tony at P/2 Organic to send out the South Austin Farmer’s Market newsletter this week. We’ve only been at the market 6 months and are grateful to Franklin, Tony and Suzanne for all of their help and advice with our growing farm.

It sure was a hot one this week! It reached a record 101 degrees out here and it was quite a shock to most of our vegetable plants. We tried to get out as early as possible each morning to be able to take a break in the afternoons. The summer planting is done and now most of our time is spent weeding and watering. The hot weather means most of the cool weather crops (cilantro, salad greens, spinach, pea shoots, green onions, etc) are all but finished for the season. Not to worry as they should be back in a few months in early fall. That means that a lot of the late spring crops (onions, potatoes, carrots, etc.) and all the summer crops are on the verge of peak production! Sweet corn, okra, melons, peas, herbs and beans are looking very good and will start coming into production the next few weeks and will be freshest for the next 2 or 3 months.

The laying hens are very active in the mornings and evenings scratching around in the pasture but stay in the shade during the hottest hours of the day. Even though chickens typically decrease laying eggs in the hot summer months, ours seem to still be going steady.

This week at SAFM the following will be available: eggs, tomatoes, burpless cucumbers, colored sweet bell peppers, squash, zucchini, carrots, onions, new potatoes, beets, basil, roux, coriander, pecan tarts, fresh baked breads, canned goods, pestos, dried fruit, dried tomatoes, herb plants, eggplant, tomato and pepper plants, basil plants, and fertilizer.

We had a heck of a storm yesterday morning with thunder and lightening directly overhead at 5 am. The two dogs were ready to crawl in bed with us. And then last night, tornadoes were in the area but no such luck.

I did manage to shred around some of the property before that happened. And today I began cleaning out the cucumber house of the dead plants. Next week we'll begin with one section of the tomato house that will be finished producing while the other two are still going.

For the market this week:eggs, tomatoes, burpless cucumbers, colored sweet bell peppers, squash, zucchini, carrots, onions, new potatoes, pecan tarts, fresh baked breads, canned goods, pestos, dried fruit, dried tomatoes, herb plants, eggplant, tomato and pepper plants, basil plants, and fertilizer.

Contrary to what the footer says at the bottom of this message, we are open from 9 - 1 and NOT 8 - 1.

Bad luck has befallen one of the local organic growers; for more info
