Greetings from SAFM,

My name is Harry Simmons with Simmons Family Farms and I was asked by Tony at P/2 Organic to send out the South Austin Farmer’s Market newsletter this week. We’ve only been at the market 6 months and are grateful to Franklin, Tony and Suzanne for all of their help and advice with our growing farm.

It sure was a hot one this week! It reached a record 101 degrees out here and it was quite a shock to most of our vegetable plants. We tried to get out as early as possible each morning to be able to take a break in the afternoons. The summer planting is done and now most of our time is spent weeding and watering. The hot weather means most of the cool weather crops (cilantro, salad greens, spinach, pea shoots, green onions, etc) are all but finished for the season. Not to worry as they should be back in a few months in early fall. That means that a lot of the late spring crops (onions, potatoes, carrots, etc.) and all the summer crops are on the verge of peak production! Sweet corn, okra, melons, peas, herbs and beans are looking very good and will start coming into production the next few weeks and will be freshest for the next 2 or 3 months.

The laying hens are very active in the mornings and evenings scratching around in the pasture but stay in the shade during the hottest hours of the day. Even though chickens typically decrease laying eggs in the hot summer months, ours seem to still be going steady.

This week at SAFM the following will be available: eggs, tomatoes, burpless cucumbers, colored sweet bell peppers, squash, zucchini, carrots, onions, new potatoes, beets, basil, roux, coriander, pecan tarts, fresh baked breads, canned goods, pestos, dried fruit, dried tomatoes, herb plants, eggplant, tomato and pepper plants, basil plants, and fertilizer.

For those of you new to the newsletter, we are open on Saturdays from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm in the El Gallo Restaurant parking lot just across from St. Edwards University. See you there!

We are located 2910 S. Congress (El Gallo Restaurant)
